Bali's highest and most sacred mountain, in the dark
The trip
Agung is the highest mountain in Bali and the most sacred: every temple on the island is oriented towards it, and Besakih sits on its flank. Climbing it is not a scenic walk. It is four to five hours up in the dark on loose volcanic rock, and about the same coming down.
This is the hardest thing on this site by a long way. Mount Batur, which most people mean when they say they climbed a volcano in Bali, is a third of the height and half the difficulty.
Highlights
Full description
There are two routes. From Pura Pasar Agung on the south side you start at about eighteen hundred metres and reach the southern rim at 2,866 m in roughly four hours. From Besakih you climb the whole thing to the true 3,031 m summit, which is six to seven hours up and a serious undertaking.
We default to the Pasar Agung route because it is the one most fit people can actually complete. Tell us if you want the Besakih route and we will price it, but we will ask honestly about your hill-walking experience first.
You start at around eleven at night, walk through forest, then scrub, then bare rock. The last hour is steep, loose and hands-occasionally-on. You reach the rim before six, watch the sun come up over Lombok and Rinjani, and start down.
The mountain closes when it is active and it closes for major ceremonies. Both happen without much notice. If it closes we move you or refund you in full, and we will always tell you as soon as we know.
Itinerary
Timings are typical, not fixed. Your guide reshapes the day around your pace and the conditions.
Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Jimbaran, Sanur, Ubud
Around eight in the evening. This is a night climb, so the day runs backwards.
Two and a half hours east and up to eighteen hundred metres. Sleep in the car.
Around eleven at night. Head torches on, pace set by the guide, not by you.
Two hours of forest and scrub, steadily steeper, in complete darkness.
An hour of loose rock and scrambling. This is the part people remember.
Before six. Lombok, Rinjani and the whole of Bali below the cloud.
Four hours down, breakfast, and back at your hotel by early afternoon.

Before you book
We would rather talk you out of the wrong trip than take your money for it. If any of these apply, message us and we’ll suggest something that fits better.
Four to five hours of steep climbing at altitude in the dark, then four hours down. This is not Mount Batur and we will not pretend it is.
The descent on loose volcanic scree is harder on knees than the climb is on lungs.
You will be exhausted and your legs will not work properly for two days. Build a rest day in.
Come prepared
Ankle support and real grip. This is the one trip on the site where trainers are genuinely not enough.
It is around 5-10°C on the rim before dawn with wind on top of that, after starting in tropical heat.
The last section is scrambling on sharp volcanic rock. Gloves are provided but trousers are on you.
We carry water and breakfast, but a nine-hour climb needs more than one person can hand you.

Batur is a two-hour walk up a small volcano. Agung is four to five hours up a big one, on worse ground, in the cold. They are not in the same category.
Pura Pasar Agung to the southern rim at 2,866 m, unless you ask for the Besakih route to the true summit. That one is six to seven hours up and we will talk it through first.
It closes for volcanic activity and for major ceremonies, sometimes at short notice. We move you to another day or refund you in full.
No, but you need hill fitness. If you have never walked uphill for four hours, this is the wrong trip to start with.
Honestly, most people who try without any hill walking turn back on the final ridge. Batur is the better booking and there is no shame in it.
