The trip

What You're Signing Up For

Batur is an active volcano with a caldera you can see from space, and the summit ridge is one of the few places in Bali where you look down on the clouds instead of up at them. The walk is 1,717 metres of altitude by the time you reach the top. Steep in places, but there is no climbing, no ropes, and thousands of people do it every week.

We run it private. That means your own car, your own guide, and a pace set by the slowest person in your group rather than by a queue of forty strangers with matching torches. If the summit is socked in, your guide will tell you honestly before you start walking, and you can reschedule.

Highlights

Why People Pick This One

  • Finish at the lakeside hot springs or a Kintamani coffee tasting
  • Back at your hotel by early afternoon, with the day still ahead

Full description

The Whole Thing

Mount Batur is an active volcano in the Kintamani highlands, sitting inside a caldera so wide you can pick it out from space. The summit is one of very few places in Bali where you look down on the clouds instead of up at them.

We pick you up in the small hours, because the whole point is being on the rim before the sun is. The drive takes about ninety minutes from South Bali, and you will doze through most of it.

Itinerary

The Trip, Stop By Stop

Timings are typical, not fixed. Your guide reshapes the day around your pace and the conditions.

  1. 6 pickup area options

Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Jimbaran, Sanur, Ubud

We collect you from your own accommodation anywhere inside these areas, at no extra cost, so the pickup address is wherever you happen to be staying, not a fixed meeting point. Your driver confirms the exact time by message the evening before.

  2. Toya Bungkah base camp

Meet your trekking guide, collect a headlamp each, and get something warm to drink. Last toilets before the summit.

    About 30 min
  3. On foot, uphill

Roughly 700 m of ascent. The first hour is a gentle gravel track; the last stretch is steeper volcanic scree where your guide sets a slow, steady pace.

    About 2 hours
  4. Mount Batur summit

Sunrise from the rim at 1,717 m. First light comes up behind Mount Abang, with Lake Batur below and, on a clear morning, Rinjani across the water.

    Main stop
  5. Breakfast in the steam vents

Eggs and banana sandwiches cooked in the volcano's own steam vents. A Batur guide tradition, and genuinely good after two hours of walking.

    Included
  6. On foot, downhill

A different route down past the 1968 lava field and the crater rim, with the caldera in daylight. Easier on the lungs and harder on the knees.

    About 90 min
  7. Hot springs or coffee, your choice

Either the natural hot springs on the lake shore, or a Kintamani plantation for a tasting flight. Your guide tells you the entry cost before you decide.

    Optional
  8. Drop-off back at your accommodation

To the same address we collected you from. Somewhere else in the same areas is fine too, just tell us in advance.

    Included

Who This Trip Isn’t For

We would rather talk you out of the wrong trip than take your money for it. If any of these apply, message us and we’ll suggest something that fits better.

Anyone with heart or breathing conditions

Two hours of sustained uphill at altitude, in the cold, starting in the middle of the night. Talk to a doctor first, not to us.

Wheelchair users and limited mobility

The trail is loose volcanic scree with no steps, handrails or level sections. There is no way to make this route accessible.

Children under 10

A 2am start and a four-hour walk is a lot to ask. Older kids who hike regularly are usually fine. Tell us their ages and we will be straight with you.

Anyone pregnant

Uneven footing in the dark and a long way from a road. The jeep sunrise tour gets you the same caldera view with none of that.

Anyone flying out the same day

We aim to have you back by early afternoon, but traffic on the Kintamani road is not something we control.

Anyone wanting a guaranteed view

It is a mountain. Some mornings it is socked in and stays that way. We will tell you the odds honestly before you start walking.

Come prepared

What To Bring

A warm layer

The summit sits around 10–15°C before sunrise and it is windy. A fleece or light jacket is enough; you'll carry it back down in your bag.

Closed shoes with grip

Trainers are fine. The scree near the top is loose, so sandals and slides genuinely don't work.

A small backpack

For your jacket, water and camera. You want both hands free on the steeper sections.

Cash

For the hot springs, coffee tasting, lunch or a walking pole. Card is not accepted at the base.

Questions About This Trip

Anything not covered here? Message us. We'd rather answer first than have you book the wrong trip.

How fit do I need to be?

If you can walk uphill for two hours with breaks, you can do this. It's steep rather than technical, with no scrambling and no exposure. Our guides go at the pace of the slowest person, and there's no shame in stopping; almost everyone does.

Can children do the trek?

From around 8 years old, if they're used to walking. Below that we'd steer you to the jeep sunrise tour instead, which reaches a viewpoint by vehicle. Tell us everyone's ages and we'll be honest about which suits you.

What happens if it rains or the summit is clouded in?

Your guide checks conditions before you start walking. If the summit is closed or the outlook is genuinely bad, you reschedule free or get a full refund of anything you've paid. If it's merely cloudy, we'll tell you the odds and let you decide. Batur often clears right at sunrise.

Is altitude a problem?

No. The summit is 1,717 m, well below the height where altitude sickness starts. You'll be out of breath from the gradient, not the air.

Do we share the trip with strangers?

Never. The car and the driver are yours. A local trekking guide joins you at the base. That's required by the Batur guide association and it's the rule for everyone on the mountain.
