The trip

What You're Signing Up For

Invictus is a proper wooden phinisi with masts and sails, and it is the most comfortable boat on this list at the price. Seven cabins rather than four means you are not forced into a four-berth if you want your own room, and every cabin has hot and cold water and wifi, which is not standard out here.

The route is the full three-day one: the near islands and the Kalong bats on day one, Padar and the dragons on day two, and a last snorkel on the third morning.

Highlights

Why People Pick This One

  • A real phinisi under sail, not a converted motor boat
  • Hot showers and wifi in every cabin, which is rare at this price
  • Seven cabins, so a private double is realistic for two people
  • Padar before dawn, dragons on Komodo Island, mantas in the afternoon
  • A balcony off the master cabin

Full description

The Whole Thing

The cabin list runs master, two deluxe, three superior and one shared. The master has a balcony and takes three at a push; deluxe and superior are doubles with their own bathrooms and a large window; the shared cabin is three single bunks with the bathroom outside.

Who This Trip Isn’t For

We would rather talk you out of the wrong trip than take your money for it. If any of these apply, message us and we’ll suggest something that fits better.

Anyone expecting a hotel room at sea

The cabins are comfortable and they are still cabins. The superior and deluxe rooms are doubles with just enough floor to stand in.

Very poor sailors

The boat moves at night and the crossing to Padar is open water. There is no getting off until morning.

Guests who cannot manage a ladder

Every landing is by dinghy, several times a day, usually with a small swell running.

Come prepared

What To Bring

Motion sickness tablets, taken before you sail

Not after. The crossing between the islands is where people regret this, and there is no pharmacy at sea.

Reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest

You are on the water all day with reflected glare. The rash vest saves your back on the snorkelling stops.

Cash in rupiah for the park fees

The national park entrance is collected separately and is not included in what you pay us.

A dry bag for your phone

The dinghy transfers are wet, every time, and Padar's ridge is a steep climb with your hands full.

Questions About This Trip

Anything not covered here? Message us. We'd rather answer first than have you book the wrong trip.

Is the Komodo National Park fee included?

No, and it is not included by any operator in Labuan Bajo. It is a government fee collected at the park itself, and it changes from time to time, so we will tell you the current amount when you book rather than print a number here that might be wrong by the time you sail.

How do I get to Labuan Bajo?

You fly. It is around an hour and a half from Denpasar and the flights run several times a day. Book the flight after we have confirmed your cabin, not before, and take an afternoon flight home on the last day.

What if the weather turns?

The captain changes the order of the stops, or drops one, and that decision belongs to the harbour master and the captain rather than to us. It is a safety call and it is not refundable, which is standard across every boat here.

Can I dive rather than snorkel?

These trips are snorkelling trips. Diving needs a boat with compressors and a divemaster, which is a different booking. Ask us and we will point you at one.

Is there really wifi?

There is, and it runs off the mobile network, so it works near Labuan Bajo and gets patchy the further west you go. Treat it as a bonus rather than something to plan a working day around.

What is the difference between deluxe and superior?

Very little: both are doubles with their own bathroom, hot water and a large window. The deluxe cabins sit slightly better on the boat, which is what the price difference buys.
