What You're Signing Up For

Canyoning is the one adventure product in Bali that has not been commoditised, because it needs certified guides, real equipment and insurance that actually covers it. You descend a river gorge the only way it can be descended: abseiling down waterfalls, jumping into pools, sliding natural rock chutes and swimming the flat bits.

Blue Gorge, near Sambangan in the north, is the route for people who have not done this before. Three hours in the canyon, abseils up to around fifteen metres, and jumps you can always walk around. Aling Gorge is the advanced version, longer and more committing, and it is an upgrade rather than a separate trip.

Highlights

Why People Pick This One

  • Certified canyoning guides, not a driver with a rope
  • Full technical kit: harness, helmet, wetsuit, ropes, and insurance that names the activity
  • Every jump has a walk-around; nothing is compulsory
  • Small teams, and a gorge with nobody else in it
  • Two routes, beginner and advanced, on the same day trip

Full description

The Whole Thing

Canyoning means descending a river gorge using the water itself as the route. Where the river drops, you abseil. Where it pools, you jump or slide. Where it flattens, you swim. There is no path in and no path out except the canyon.

Itinerary

The Trip, Stop By Stop

Timings are typical, not fixed. Your guide reshapes the day around your pace and the conditions.

  1. Early hotel pickup

Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Jimbaran, Sanur, Ubud

Around 06:00, because the gorge is in the north. Confirmed by message the evening before.

    Included
  2. Drive north

Roughly two and a half hours from Ubud, longer from the south coast. Stop for coffee on the way.

  3. Kit up and brief

Wetsuit, harness, helmet. A full briefing on the ropes, the signals and the jumps before anyone goes near the water.

  4. In the canyon

About three hours: abseils, jumps, natural slides and swims. Your guides go first on every descent.

  5. Out, changed, lunch

Warm clothes and a hot meal. You will want both.

  6. Drive back

The long way home. Most people sleep.

Who This Trip Isn’t For

We would rather talk you out of the wrong trip than take your money for it. If any of these apply, message us and we’ll suggest something that fits better.

Non-swimmers

There are swims between the descents. This one is a hard no, and we will say so.

Heart, shoulder or back conditions

Abseiling loads your shoulders and cold water shocks the system. Please tell us.

Anyone pregnant

Jumps and rope descents. Not this trip; ask us for the terraces instead.

Come prepared

What To Bring

Swimwear worn under everything

You are in the water constantly from the first abseil. There is nowhere private to change at the gorge.

Shoes you can drown

Old trainers or sport sandals with a heel strap. The guides provide the rest of the kit but not footwear.

A complete change of dry clothes

Every layer you wear will be soaked. The drive back is long and air-conditioned.

Nothing loose in your pockets

Phones, keys and sunglasses all end up at the bottom of a pool. Leave them in the car; the guides carry a dry barrel.

Questions About This Trip

Anything not covered here? Message us. We'd rather answer first than have you book the wrong trip.

Do I need experience?

Not for Blue Gorge. Everything is taught on the day and a guide goes first on every descent. Aling Gorge assumes you have done a canyon before, or that you are confident and fit.

Do I have to jump?

No. Every jump on the beginner route has a walk-around or an abseil alternative. Nobody is talked into anything.

What is the difference between the two gorges?

Blue Gorge is the beginner route, roughly three hours, abseils to about fifteen metres. Aling Gorge is longer, more committing and costs more. You can choose on the booking, or ask us which suits you.

How far is it?

It is in the north, near Singaraja, so about two and a half hours each way from Ubud. That is why this is a full day and why the car costs more than an Ubud activity.

Is insurance included?

Yes, and it names canyoning specifically. Plenty of general travel policies exclude it, so check yours as well.
