The trip

What You're Signing Up For

The Campuhan ridge is a narrow paved path along the top of a hill between two rivers, with tall grass falling away on both sides and almost nothing built on it. It runs about two kilometres from the Gunung Lebah temple at the bottom to a warung at the far end.

It is free, it is public, and at six in the morning it is one of the best hours in Ubud. By nine it is hot, busy and much less special, which is the entire reason we start in the dark.

Highlights

Why People Pick This One

  • A ridge path with valleys either side and almost nothing built on it
  • First light, before the heat and before anybody else is on it
  • Flat, paved and easy, so it suits almost anyone who can walk 4 km
  • Coffee at a village warung at the far end, with the view
  • Breakfast in Ubud afterwards, when the town is at its quietest

The Whole Thing

You are paying us for the car and the alarm clock, not for access. We say that plainly because there are operators selling this as a ticketed experience and it has never cost anything.

Itinerary

The Trip, Stop By Stop

Timings are typical, not fixed. Your guide reshapes the day around your pace and the conditions.

  1. Hotel pickup

Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Jimbaran, Sanur, Ubud

Around five, earlier from the south coast. Sunrise is about six all year.

    Included
  2. Gunung Lebah temple

The trailhead sits beside the temple where the two rivers meet.

  3. Up onto the ridge

One short climb, then the path levels out along the spine of the hill.

  4. The open stretch

About two kilometres of tall grass and valley on both sides. This is the bit.

  5. Bangkiang Sidem

A warung at the far end with coffee and a view. Turn round here.

  6. Breakfast in Ubud

Back down and into town, which is still half asleep at eight.

  7. Back to your hotel

Or on to another stop, with no extra charge for the car.

Who This Trip Isn’t For

We would rather talk you out of the wrong trip than take your money for it. If any of these apply, message us and we’ll suggest something that fits better.

Anyone who will not get up at five

The whole point is being on the ridge before the sun and the crowd. At nine it is a hot walk on a hill.

Anyone wanting a hard hike

It is two flat kilometres on a paved path. If you want a proper climb, book Batur or Agung.

Anyone travelling in heavy rain

The path is fine wet, but there is no shade and no shelter at all along the ridge.

Come prepared

What To Bring

A head torch or your phone light

The first ten minutes from the temple are in the dark, and the path is narrow with a drop on both sides.

Trainers or flat sandals

It is paved the whole way, so nothing technical is needed. Just not heels or loose flip-flops.

A light layer

Ubud is genuinely cool at half five and warm by seven. One layer covers both ends of the walk.

Water, and a bit of cash

There is one warung, at the far end, and it takes cash only. Nothing else is open along the ridge.

Questions About This Trip

Anything not covered here? Message us. We'd rather answer first than have you book the wrong trip.

Is there really no entrance fee?

None. It is a public path and always has been. You are paying for the car, the early start and someone waiting at the bottom.

How long does the walk take?

About ninety minutes for the full out-and-back with a stop. Under an hour if you turn round early.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, from about six. It is flat and paved, though the ridge is narrow in places and there is a drop on both sides.

Can we add something after?

Yes. Monkey Forest, Tegallalang and Tirta Empul are all close and there is no extra charge for the car, only their own entrances.

What if it is cloudy?

The walk is still good; the light is just flatter. We will not cancel for cloud, but tell us if you would rather move the day.
