Cliff-edge pools, a long afternoon and a driver who waits
The trip
The Bukit clifftop has the best sunset seats in Bali and the most confusing pricing. Some clubs are free to walk into, some charge entry, some have a minimum spend that doubles at weekends, and some require booking days ahead for a daybed.
That is what the driver is for. We take you to two, in the right order, at the times when one is quiet and the other is filling, and we tell you what each is charging that week before you sit down.
Highlights
Full description
The clifftop clubs are a recent thing: the first opened around 2010 and there are now more than a dozen along the Uluwatu road, most of them built out over the edge with the pool cantilevered towards the sea.
What they share is the aspect. The Bukit faces west into open ocean with nothing between it and Java, so the sunset arrives unobstructed. What they do not share is pricing, which is why arriving informed matters.
Minimum spends on the Bukit run from nothing to well over fifty dollars a head at weekends and in high season. We will always tell you before you walk in, and we are happy to take you somewhere cheaper.

Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Jimbaran, Sanur, Ubud
Early afternoon, timed backwards from sunset. Confirmed the evening before.
The quieter one, mid-afternoon, while there are still loungers free.
Down the cliff road for a swim in the sea between the two. No steps.
Arriving as it fills, in time to get a seat facing the water before sunset.
Straight out to sea from the Bukit, which is why people come up here.
Same car, same driver. The cliff road is dark and busy afterwards.

Several of the best clubs are eighteen-plus after a certain hour. Tell us ages and we will pick accordingly.
These are music venues by early evening. Uluwatu temple or Melasti is the quiet alternative.
Come prepared
Most of the cliff clubs turn away vests and flip-flops after five. Nothing formal, just not beachwear.
The pool is the point at the ones with a pool. There are changing rooms but wearing it saves a queue.
Most clubs have one and it varies from nothing to sixty dollars a head. Your driver will tell you before you walk in.
The Bukit is exposed and it gets breezy on the cliff edge once the sun has gone.

Priced per vehicle, not per person. An SUV or MPV seats up to five guests. The $55 covers the car, the driver and everything in the vehicle for the day: fuel, parking, tolls and cold water. Entrance tickets, meals and anything charged on site are paid as you go.
