What You're Signing Up For

Three waterfalls within twenty minutes of each other in Gianyar, all close enough to Ubud that you are back by mid-afternoon. This is the answer to the waterfall day that does not involve five hours in a car.

Tegenungan is the wide, loud one you have seen. Tibumana is a single soft curtain into a round pool with almost nobody there. Kanto Lampo is the strangest of the three: water running down a stepped rock face that you climb up into.

The Whole Thing

The order matters. We do Tegenungan first because it is busiest after ten, then Tibumana while everyone else is at Tegenungan, then Kanto Lampo, which sits in a village and never really gets crowded.

Itinerary

The Trip, Stop By Stop

Timings are typical, not fixed. Your guide reshapes the day around your pace and the conditions.

  1. Hotel pickup

    Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Jimbaran, Sanur, Ubud

    An early start. Tegenungan fills up from about ten and the light is better before it.

  2. Tegenungan

    The wide one. About 160 steps down, a big pool, and spray you feel from the top.

  3. Tibumana

    Twenty minutes east. A single curtain into a round pool, usually near-empty.

  4. Lunch

    A warung between the two, or into Ubud if your group would rather have the choice.

  5. Kanto Lampo

    Water down a stepped rock face in the middle of a village. The best photographs of the day.

  6. Dry off

    Changing rooms are basic at all three, so this is the moment for dry clothes.

  7. Back to your hotel

    Mid-afternoon, ahead of the traffic and usually ahead of the rain.

We would rather talk you out of the wrong trip than take your money for it. If any of these apply, message us and we’ll suggest something that fits better.

Anyone who cannot manage steps

Around 400 steps across the day, all of them down and back up. There is no way round them at any of the three.

Anyone wanting one big waterfall

These are three modest ones close together. If you want the flagship, that is Sekumpul, and it is a much longer day.

Anyone travelling right after heavy rain

The rivers run brown and the sites sometimes close. We check that morning and will move you rather than waste your day.

What To Bring

Swimwear worn from the car

Three sites, three sets of basic changing rooms. Wearing it under your clothes saves the queue at every one.

Shoes with grip that can get wet

Kanto Lampo is a climb over wet rock and the steps at Tegenungan are slick. Sport sandals or old trainers.

A dry bag for your phone

You will want it at Kanto Lampo, which means carrying it into the water. Every trip someone does not.

A second set of dry clothes

You will be wet three times. The car is air conditioned and the drive home is over an hour.

How does this compare to Sekumpul?

Much easier and much shorter. Sekumpul is one spectacular waterfall and 500 steps in north Bali; this is three modest ones an hour from Ubud.

Can we swim at all three?

Usually. Tegenungan's pool is the strongest current, Tibumana the calmest. After heavy rain the guides close the pools and we would not swim anyway.

Which is the best one?

Tibumana if you want quiet, Kanto Lampo if you want the photograph. Tegenungan is the most impressive and the busiest.

Is it good for children?

From about eight. It is the steps rather than the water that decide it, and there are a lot of them across the day.

What if the sites are closed?

Your driver checks the morning you travel. If all three are shut we move you to another day or refund you in full.
