What You're Signing Up For

Sekumpul is the one waterfall in Bali that people come back from quieter than they went. Seven falls drop into the same green gorge from eighty metres up, and you hear it long before the path turns and shows it to you.

It is also the one that asks something of you. Roughly five hundred steps down into the valley, a river crossing at the bottom that is knee-deep in dry season and thigh-deep after rain, and five hundred steps back up in the heat. That is the whole trade.

The Whole Thing

The village of Lemukih owns and runs the site, which is why a local guide is compulsory and why the fee goes where it should. We do not treat that as an annoyance. The guides know which of the paths is safe after rain and which pool is deep enough to swim in.

Itinerary

The Trip, Stop By Stop

Timings are typical, not fixed. Your guide reshapes the day around your pace and the conditions.

  1. Hotel pickup

    Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Jimbaran, Sanur, Ubud

    An early start, because this is a long drive and the light in the gorge is best mid-morning.

  2. Drive north

    Two and a half to three hours over the central mountains and down towards Singaraja.

  3. Lemukih and the guides

    Registration at the village, where your local guide joins you for the walk.

  4. The viewpoint

    The first sight of all seven falls at once, from across the valley.

  5. Down into the gorge

    Around five hundred steps, then a river crossing to the base of the main fall.

  6. Fiji waterfall

    Fifteen minutes further along the river, and usually empty.

  7. Climb out and drive home

    The stairs back up, a long cold drink, and the road south.

Before you book

Who This Trip Isn’t For

We would rather talk you out of the wrong trip than take your money for it. If any of these apply, message us and we’ll suggest something that fits better.

Anyone with knee or hip trouble

Five hundred steps down is harder on knees than the climb back up. This one is genuinely not for everyone.

Anyone who wants a quick photo stop

Three to four hours on foot, minimum. Git Git is ten minutes from the road and we will happily book that instead.

Anyone travelling straight after heavy rain

The river crossing gets deep and the guides close the lower path. We will tell you the day before if that is likely.

Come prepared

What To Bring

Shoes with grip

The steps are wet stone and the last stretch is mud. Trainers are fine, flip-flops are genuinely dangerous here.

Swimwear under your clothes

There is nowhere private to change at the bottom. Wear it from the car and save yourself the problem.

A dry bag or a plastic bag

You will be crossing the river holding your phone. Every year somebody does not, once.

More water than you think

It is humid in the gorge and the climb out is the hard half. We carry water but bring your own bottle too.

How hard is it really?

Moderate. If you can manage five hundred steps down and back up in humid heat without stopping every minute, you will be fine. If that sounds grim, it will be.

Why is the guide compulsory?

The site belongs to Lemukih village and they run access. It also means somebody with you knows the river, which matters more than people expect.

Can we swim?

Usually yes, at the base of the main fall and at Fiji. After heavy rain the guides will say no, and they are right.

Is there a shortcut?

There are ojek riders who will take you up the steepest road section for a small fee. Plenty of people use them on the way out and nobody minds.

Can we combine it with anything?

Git Git and Banyumala are both close. Lovina is forty minutes away, which is why some guests do Sekumpul and stay north overnight rather than driving back the same day.
