Bali has more waterfalls than any list can hold, and the famous ones are famous largely because they are easy to park at. This day goes to three chosen on the morning by your guide, based on which have water and which have people.

Expect steps. Most Bali waterfalls sit at the bottom of a river gorge, which means a descent on the way in and a climb on the way out. Nothing technical, but tell us your group's mobility and we'll pick accordingly.

The Whole Thing

Bali has a great many waterfalls and most of the famous ones now have a car park, a ticket booth and a queue for the photo. This day goes to three that are chosen on the morning, based on which rivers are actually running well.

That means the exact three are not fixed. Your guide checks the water level before deciding, because a waterfall in the wrong week is a trickle down a wet rock.

  1. 6 pickup area options

    Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Jimbaran, Sanur, Ubud

    We collect you from your own accommodation anywhere inside these areas, at no extra cost, so the pickup address is wherever you happen to be staying, not a fixed meeting point. Your driver confirms the exact time by message the evening before.

  2. First waterfall

    Usually Tegenungan or Tukad Cepung. Cepung is the one where light falls through a slot in the cave roof, and it only does that between about 10:00 and 12:00 on a clear day.

  3. Second waterfall

    Something quieter, often Kanto Lampo or Goa Rang Reng, both of which you can stand under. Swimwear worth having on already.

  4. Lunch

    A warung near the river, or a proper restaurant in Ubud if you want a break from the heat.

    The big one, often Banyumala twin falls, which involves the longest descent of the day and rewards it with a pool you can swim across.

Anyone who cannot manage steps

All three involve stairs, some steep and often slippery. There is no step-free route to any of them.

Anyone wanting guaranteed swimming

Whether a pool is safe depends on the flow that morning. In heavy rain the answer is sometimes no.

Anyone set on specific waterfalls

We choose on water level, not on a fixed list. If you have your heart set on one in particular, tell us before you book.

Anyone in a hurry

It is nine hours and a lot of it is driving. The waterfalls are spread out, which is exactly why they are quiet.

What To Bring

Swimwear under your clothes

Changing facilities range from basic to nonexistent. Wearing it from the start saves a lot of awkwardness.

Shoes with grip

Wet volcanic rock is genuinely slippery. Sandals with a strap are fine; flip-flops are not.

A dry bag or a plastic bag

For your phone. Spray from the bigger falls reaches further than you expect.

A change of clothes

You will be wet for most of the day and air-conditioning on the drive home is unforgiving.

How many steps are we talking about?

Between 100 and 400 depending on the fall. Tukad Cepung is the gentlest, Banyumala the steepest. Tell us if anyone in the group has knee trouble and we'll build the day around the easier ones.

Is the water safe to swim in?

At the falls we use, yes. We avoid any that sit downstream of villages without treatment, and we skip swimming entirely after heavy rain because the flow gets strong and the water turns brown.

Which is the best month?

November to March gives you the fullest water, though also the most rain. June to September is drier and some of the smaller falls thin out. There is no bad month; the shortlist just changes.

Can we do this with a toddler?

One or two of the easier falls, yes, with a carrier rather than a pushchair. All three in a day is a lot for small legs and we'd suggest trimming it.

Do we need to bring towels?

No, we keep towels in the car. Bring your own if you prefer something larger.
