The trip

What You're Signing Up For

The cheapest good food in Bali is sold from a cart, a bench or a front room, and almost none of it has a menu in English. That is the entire problem this evening solves.

Six or seven stops through Ubud's night market and the warungs around it, everything included, with somebody who knows which stall does the good babi guling and which one is coasting on its reputation.

Highlights

Why People Pick This One

  • Six or seven stops and everything you eat is included
  • Babi guling from the stall Balinese queue at, not the one on the tourist strip
  • Somebody to order for you, in Indonesian, at the local price
  • The night market at its busiest, which is after seven
  • The cheapest thing on this site and one of the best evenings on it

Full description

The Whole Thing

You will eat babi guling, sate lilit, nasi campur, martabak, and something with sambal in it that is hotter than you expected. There will be a stop for es campur, which is shaved ice, condensed milk, jelly and fruit, and which sounds wrong and tastes right.

Itinerary

The Trip, Stop By Stop

Timings are typical, not fixed. Your guide reshapes the day around your pace and the conditions.

  1. Hotel pickup

Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Jimbaran, Sanur, Ubud

Late afternoon. The market gets going around six and is best after seven.

    Included
  2. Drive to Ubud

About ninety minutes from the south coast in evening traffic.

  3. Babi guling

The first stop and the one everyone remembers. Suckling pig, crackling, rice.

  4. The night market

Sate lilit, martabak, jaja and whatever is good that week.

  5. A warung sit-down

Off the main street, where you sit and eat nasi campur properly.

  6. Es campur

Shaved ice, palm syrup, jelly and fruit. Sounds odd, works.

  7. Back to your hotel

    Around nine, comprehensively fed.

Who This Trip Isn’t For

We would rather talk you out of the wrong trip than take your money for it. If any of these apply, message us and we’ll suggest something that fits better.

Anyone with a delicate stomach

It is street food. It is cooked hot and fresh in front of you, which is the safe way, but this is not the evening to find out how you cope.

Strict vegans

Vegetarian we can route around comfortably. Vegan is genuinely hard here, because shrimp paste is in almost everything, and we would rather warn you than disappoint you.

Anyone who wants to sit down all evening

Most of this is standing at a cart or perched on a bench. There is one proper sit-down stop and that is it.

Come prepared

What To Bring

Cash in small notes

Everything is included, but you will want to buy something extra, and no cart takes a card or has change for a big note.

Wet wipes or tissues

Most stalls have no napkins and several dishes are eaten with your hands.

Mosquito repellent

Standing still outdoors after dark in Ubud, which is where they live.

An empty stomach

Six or seven stops is more food than it sounds. Skip lunch, and do not eat before pickup.

Questions About This Trip

Anything not covered here? Message us. We'd rather answer first than have you book the wrong trip.

Is all the food included?

Yes, every stop, plus water and one local drink. You only pay if you decide to buy something extra.

How spicy is it?

Balinese food runs hot, but the sambal is usually on the side. Say the word and everything comes mild.

Can you do vegetarian?

Yes, if you tell us when you book. Tempe, tahu, gado-gado and urab are all excellent. Vegan is much harder because of shrimp paste, and we will be honest about the limits.

Is street food safe?

It is cooked to order over high heat in front of you, which is the safest way to eat anywhere. We avoid anything that has been sitting out.

What time does it finish?

Around nine at the market, home by about ten depending where you are staying.
