What You're Signing Up For

Jimbaran Bay faces west, the beach is flat, and the warungs put their tables straight onto the sand at the waterline. You choose your fish, prawns, squid or crab from ice at the front, they weigh it, grill it over coconut husk and bring it out with sambal, rice and kangkung.

The catch is the pricing: it is by the kilo and it is negotiable, and visitors who do not know that regularly pay double. Your driver walks you in, tells you the going rate that week, and waits. That is most of what you are paying us for.

The Whole Thing

Jimbaran was a fishing village long before it was anything else, and the morning market at the north end of the bay still lands the catch that ends up on the grills at night. The warungs buy from it daily.

  1. Hotel pickup

    Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Jimbaran, Sanur, Ubud

    Around 16:30, adjusted to sunset. Your driver confirms the evening before.

    Through the fishing village to the warung strip on Muaya beach.

  3. Choose your seafood

    At the ice display. Your driver tells you the fair rate per kilo before anything is weighed.

  4. Dinner on the sand

    Table at the waterline as the sun drops. Grilled over coconut husk, brought out in stages.

  5. A walk on the beach

    The bay curves for three kilometres and it is worth twenty minutes of it after eating.

  6. Back to your hotel

    Same car, same driver.

Anyone who dislikes bargaining

The seafood is priced by weight and it is negotiable. Your driver handles it, but the process is visible.

The grills are shared and cross-contamination is realistic. Tell us and we will find a different dinner.

Anyone wanting a quiet dinner

It is a busy strip with a lot of tables and often live music. Lovely, but not intimate.

What To Bring

Cash, and a bit more than you planned

Seafood is sold by weight and settled at the table. Your driver will tell you the fair rate per kilo before you order.

Wet wipes or tissues

It is whole grilled fish eaten with your hands at a plastic table on sand. The finger bowl only goes so far.

A layer for after dark

It is warm at sunset and breezy on the sand by eight, especially in the dry season.

Sandals you can slip off

The tables are set on the beach itself. Everybody ends up barefoot within ten minutes.

Why is the food not included?

Because it is sold by weight and you pick it yourself. Any operator quoting a fixed price is either marking it up or deciding your order for you. Your driver makes sure the rate is fair instead.

Roughly what will dinner cost?

Two people eating well, including a whole fish, prawns, rice and drinks, usually lands between twenty-five and forty dollars in total. Lobster changes that considerably.

Is it touristy?

Completely, and it is still good. The fish is fresh, the setting is genuinely lovely, and the locals eat at the same strip on weekends.

What if it rains?

The warungs have covered sections set back from the sand. You lose the sunset, not the dinner.

Can we go straight to the airport afterwards?

Yes, it is ten minutes and we do this often for last evenings. Tell us and the driver will take your luggage from the start.
