Tanah Lot sits on a rock that becomes an island at high tide, and at sunset the sun goes down behind it almost exactly. It is the most photographed temple in Bali and it is busy, and it is still worth it, because there is nothing else quite like it anywhere.

The trick is arriving early enough to see Taman Ayun first. That is the royal water temple at Mengwi, UNESCO-listed, surrounded by a moat, and almost empty compared with what waits down the road. Doing the quiet one first makes the loud one bearable.

The Whole Thing

Tanah Lot was founded in the sixteenth century by Nirartha, the priest who established most of Bali's sea temples, and the rock has been eroding under it ever since. About a third of what you see today is engineered stone, installed in the 1990s when the outcrop began to fail.

  1. Hotel pickup

    Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Jimbaran, Sanur, Ubud

    Mid-afternoon, timed backwards from sunset. Confirmed the evening before.

  3. Drive to the coast

    Half an hour west through the rice country to Beraban.

  4. Tanah Lot

    Time to walk the cliff path and find a spot before the light goes.

    The sun drops behind the rock. Stay for the twenty minutes after, when most people leave and the sky is better.

  6. Back to your hotel

    Same car, same driver. Forty minutes to Seminyak, an hour to Ubud.

Anyone who hates crowds

The hour before sunset is genuinely packed. Arriving early and walking north helps, but it is busy.

Anyone expecting to enter the temple

The temple on the rock is for worshippers. Visitors go to the base at low tide and no further.

Anyone travelling in heavy rain

Overcast kills the sunset entirely. Your driver will tell you the odds and offer to move the day.

Sandals you can slip off easily

The path down to the rock and the holy spring is barefoot once you are past the gate.

A layer for after sunset

The west coast is exposed and the wind comes up as soon as the light goes.

Cash for the entrance donations

The temple entrance is included, but the holy-water blessing at the base of the rock is a donation, in cash.

Sunglasses

You are looking west at the sea for the last hour of the day. This is the one trip where they earn their place.

How busy does it get?

Very, in the hour before sunset. Arriving earlier and walking north along the cliff path buys you a lot of space, and your driver knows where.

Can we walk out to the temple?

Only at low tide, and only to the base; the temple itself is for worshippers. At high tide the causeway is under water, which is arguably the better photograph.

Is Taman Ayun worth the extra hour?

We think so, and it is included either way. It is UNESCO-listed, it has a moat on all four sides, and there is almost nobody there.

What if it is cloudy?

Cloud usually improves it. Total overcast does not, and if the forecast is that bad your driver will say so and offer to move the day.

Can we eat there?

There are warungs and a couple of decent cliff restaurants. Not included, and your driver will point you at the ones that are not tourist traps.
