The trip

What You're Signing Up For

Canggu has a reputation as a traffic jam with a coffee problem, and by eleven in the morning that is fair. Before eight it is a different place: empty lanes, the rice fields between Berawa and Babakan still worked by hand, and the good cafes with tables free.

This is a slow morning rather than a sightseeing run. A walk through the fields on the Nyanyi track, breakfast somewhere that roasts its own, the shortcut past Batu Bolong, and back before the streets seize up.

Highlights

Why People Pick This One

  • Out before seven, which is the whole point
  • Rice fields between Berawa and Babakan, still worked by hand
  • Breakfast at a roaster rather than a chain
  • Echo Beach and Batu Bolong while the surfers are still out
  • Back at your hotel before the midday traffic starts

Full description

The Whole Thing

Canggu was rice fields and a handful of surf losmen until about 2015. The fields between Berawa and Babakan are what is left, farmed by the same families, and they are shrinking every year as villas go up.

Who This Trip Isn’t For

We would rather talk you out of the wrong trip than take your money for it. If any of these apply, message us and we’ll suggest something that fits better.

Anyone who will not get up early

Leave at nine and you will spend the morning in traffic. The early start is the entire product.

Anyone wanting landmarks

There are none. It is a walk, a coffee and a stretch of coast.

Anyone travelling in the wet season

The field track turns to mud and the walk becomes unpleasant. Ask us about your dates.

Come prepared

What To Bring

Comfortable shoes

This is a walking-and-sitting day on uneven pavements and rice-field paths.

A card and some cash

The cafés all take cards. The warungs, the market and the parking attendants do not.

Sunglasses and a hat

The rice-field paths have no shade at all, and the light off the water is bright.

A tote bag

Canggu is where guests accidentally buy things. You will want somewhere to put them.

Questions About This Trip

Anything not covered here? Message us. We'd rather answer first than have you book the wrong trip.

Why so early?

Because Canggu after nine is genuinely unpleasant to drive. At half past six it is empty and the fields have mist on them. It is the difference between a good morning and a bad one.

Is breakfast included?

No. There are half a dozen places we would happily send you to and marking them up would be silly. Budget ten dollars a head.

How far is the walk?

Around two kilometres, entirely flat, on a track between the fields. Twenty minutes if you march, an hour if you stop.

Can we add a surf lesson?

Yes, and it works well: walk and breakfast first, lesson at mid-tide. Tell us and we will price the two together.

Is there anything to see?

Not in the landmark sense. This is a morning, not a sight. If you want temples, take Tanah Lot instead.
