What You're Signing Up For
You climb down a ladder, a helmet is lowered onto your shoulders, and air is pumped into it from the boat above. The helmet holds the water out the same way an upturned glass does, so your head stays completely dry. You breathe normally and you walk.
Nothing about it requires you to swim, hold your breath, or equalise the way a diver does. Glasses stay on. Hair stays dry. Guests who have refused to snorkel their entire lives do this one.

Full description
The Whole Thing
There are two slots a day, morning and early afternoon, both from the beach at Sanur. Pickup is timed around your slot rather than a fixed departure.
Once you are down there is an instructor with you the whole thirty minutes, holding a bag of fish food, which is what turns a patch of sand into a cloud of sergeant majors and butterflyfish. Photographs are taken and sold afterwards; nobody minds if you say no.
The helmet weighs a great deal out of the water and almost nothing in it. It sits on your shoulders rather than clamping to your head, and the only real sensation is a mild pressure in your ears as you go down the ladder, which clears by swallowing.
Sanur faces east across a shallow lagoon inside a reef, so the water is calm and the visibility is steady. That is why the operators are here and not on the west coast.

Anyone with heart or ear problems
You go five metres down and the pressure change is real, even without diving. Ask your doctor first.
Pregnant travellers
The operators will not take you, and neither would we.
Children under about seven
The helmet has a minimum size and small children cannot keep it stable on their shoulders.

What To Bring
Swimwear worn under your clothes
The changing room is a beach shower block and the slot times are tight.
Your glasses if you wear them
They stay on and stay dry inside the helmet, which is the one advantage this has over a mask.
A hair tie
Long hair floats up into the helmet seal. Tie it back before the ladder, not on it.
Cash for the photos
The operator's photographer takes them whether you buy or not, and only takes cash at the end.

Do I need to be able to swim?
No. You stand and walk on sand in about five metres of water with a helmet feeding you air from the surface. Non-swimmers do this every day.
Does my head get wet?
No. The helmet traps air the way an upturned glass does, so the water level sits at your shoulders. Hair, glasses and makeup all survive.
How deep is it?
Around five metres. Enough that your ears notice on the ladder, not enough to need any diving qualification.
Can children do it?
From about seven, depending on their size and the helmet. Tell us their ages and we will check with the operator before you book.
How long is it really?
Thirty minutes underwater. With the briefing, the boat and the shower, the whole thing is about three and a half hours door to door.
