What You're Signing Up For

Saba is a long stretch of black volcanic sand east of Sanur, between the river mouths, and the stables there run rides along the beach and back through the rice fields and the village behind it.

The rides suit people who have never been on a horse. They are led, they walk, and there is a handler beside every animal. Confident riders can ask for something with more in it, and the stables will decide once they have watched you in the arena.

The Whole Thing

We drive you and we wait. The ride itself you book and pay at the stable, because the price depends entirely on how long you go out for and which horse you end up on, and quoting one number here would be guesswork.

Itinerary

The Trip, Stop By Stop

Timings are typical, not fixed. Your guide reshapes the day around your pace and the conditions.

  1. Hotel pickup

    Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Jimbaran, Sanur, Ubud

    Mid-afternoon. The late ride is the good one and the sand is cooler.

  2. Drive to Saba

    Forty minutes from Sanur, about ninety from Seminyak, east along the coast.

  3. At the stable

    Helmets, a few minutes in the arena, and the handlers match you to a horse.

  4. The beach

    Out along the black sand towards the river mouth, led the whole way.

  5. Back through the fields

    The return leg cuts inland through rice fields and the village.

  6. A drink at the stable

    Most of them have somewhere to sit while the horses are put away.

  7. Drive home

    Back before dark, or on to dinner if you would rather.

Who This Trip Isn’t For

We would rather talk you out of the wrong trip than take your money for it. If any of these apply, message us and we’ll suggest something that fits better.

Anyone expecting the ride to be included

It is not, and the page says so twice for a reason. You pay the stable direct, at their price.

Anyone over the stable's weight limit

Most set it around 80–90 kg. Tell us your weight when you book and we will check before you travel.

Experienced riders wanting a real gallop

These are led beach rides. Ask us first and we will find you a stable that does more.

Come prepared

What To Bring

Long trousers or leggings

Bare legs against a saddle for an hour is the one thing everybody regrets. Jeans or leggings, not shorts.

Closed shoes with a small heel

Trainers are fine. Flip-flops slip straight through a stirrup and the stables will refuse them.

Sunscreen and a hat that stays on

You are in the open the whole ride, and a hat that blows off at a walk is a hat lost in the sea.

Cash for the stable

The ride is paid on site and most of the Saba stables take cash only. Bring more than you think the ride will cost.

Why is the ride not included?

Because the price depends on how long you ride and which horse you get, and we would only be inventing a number. You pay the stable direct and your driver tells you the rates first.

Do I need to have ridden before?

No. The beach rides are led at a walk with a handler beside you. Most people on them have never sat on a horse.

Can children ride?

Usually from about four, on a lead rein with a parent walking alongside. Confirm ages with us and we will check with the stable.

How are the horses kept?

The Saba stables are the better ones on this coast, but standards vary and we would rather you looked for yourself. If anything bothers you, do not ride and tell us; we will not charge you for the day.

What time should we go?

Late afternoon. Black sand in the middle of the day is genuinely hot and the light is flat. The last ride before sunset is the one worth doing.
