The trip

What You're Signing Up For

The Sambangan valley has four waterfalls within a twenty-minute walk of each other, and three of them you are allowed to jump into. There is also a natural rock slide worn smooth by the river, which is the bit everyone films and nobody expects to enjoy as much as they do.

The jumps are five, ten and fifteen metres. Every one of them is optional, and the guides genuinely do not push. Plenty of guests do the slide and the five-metre and watch the rest, which is a perfectly good day.

Highlights

Why People Pick This One

  • Three jumps at five, ten and fifteen metres, every one of them optional
  • The natural rock slide, which is the surprise favourite most days
  • Four waterfalls in one small valley, so no long slog between them
  • Village guides who have done this thousands of times and never push
  • Life jacket, helmet and entrance all included in the price

Full description

The Whole Thing

Aling-Aling itself is the tall twin fall at the top of the valley, and it is the one you may not jump into: it is sacred and the drop is wrong anyway. The jumping happens at Kroya, Kembar and Pucuk, further down the same river.

Itinerary

The Trip, Stop By Stop

Timings are typical, not fixed. Your guide reshapes the day around your pace and the conditions.

  1. Hotel pickup

Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Jimbaran, Sanur, Ubud

An early start; the valley is at its best before the afternoon rain.

    Included
  2. Drive to Sambangan

Two and a half hours over the mountains towards Singaraja.

  3. Aling-Aling falls

The tall twin fall at the top of the valley. Look, do not jump: this one is sacred.

  4. The rock slide

A smooth chute of river rock into a deep pool. Everybody does this one twice.

  5. Kroya and the jumps

Five, ten and fifteen metres, in that order, with a guide counting you in.

  6. Dry off and eat

A warung above the valley, and the walk back up through the plantations.

  7. Drive home

Back over the mountains, usually asleep by Bedugul.

Who This Trip Isn’t For

We would rather talk you out of the wrong trip than take your money for it. If any of these apply, message us and we’ll suggest something that fits better.

Anyone who cannot swim confidently

You land in deep water and swim out. A life jacket helps but it does not make you a swimmer.

Anyone with back, neck or ear trouble

A fifteen-metre entry is a real impact. If you are unsure, do the slide and the five and skip the rest.

Anyone who wants a gentle waterfall day

This is an adrenaline trip with waterfalls in it. Banyumala or Git Git will suit you far better.

Come prepared

What To Bring

Swimwear worn from the car

You will be wet within twenty minutes and the changing huts are basic. Wear it under your clothes.

A second set of dry clothes

For the drive home. Two and a half hours in wet shorts is a long two and a half hours.

Shoes you can get soaked

Trainers or sport sandals with a heel strap. The rocks are slick and flip-flops come off in the water.

A dry bag for your phone

There is nowhere safe and dry at the jumps. Leave valuables in the car and take a waterproof pouch for the rest.

Questions About This Trip

Anything not covered here? Message us. We'd rather answer first than have you book the wrong trip.

Do I have to jump?

No. Not one of them. Guests regularly do the slide and the five-metre and photograph the rest, and the guides are completely used to it.

Is it safe?

The pools are deep and the guides check them daily and close jumps when the river is up. The risk is real but managed, and it is your call every single time.

What is the minimum age?

Twelve for the jumps, and a confident swimmer. Younger children can come and swim at the lower pools with a parent.

How much walking is there?

About twenty minutes of steps between falls, and a climb back up at the end. Far less than Sekumpul.

What if it rains?

Light rain is fine. After heavy rain the guides close the higher jumps, and if the whole site closes we move the day or refund you in full.
