What You're Signing Up For

Everyone is sold the sunrise trek. It is a wonderful thing and it involves a two o'clock alarm, four hours of walking in the dark and cold, and a group of forty on the summit. This is the other way to see the same caldera.

You leave after breakfast, drive up through Tegallalang and the coffee villages, and arrive on the Kintamani ridge to a view straight down into the crater at Lake Batur and Mount Abang. Then a coffee plantation, and the hot springs on the lake shore if you want them.

The Whole Thing

The Batur caldera is thirteen kilometres across, formed by an eruption around thirty thousand years ago that was orders of magnitude larger than anything the mountain has done since. What you look down on from Kintamani is the floor of that collapse.

Itinerary

The Trip, Stop By Stop

  1. Hotel pickup

    Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Jimbaran, Sanur, Ubud

    After breakfast, around 08:00. Your driver confirms the evening before.

  2. Up through Tegallalang

    The terraces on the way north, before the coach parties arrive.

  3. Kintamani ridge

    The caldera view: Lake Batur, Mount Abang and the black lava fields from the 1963 flow.

  4. Coffee plantation

    Kintamani arabica, luwak if you want it, and a tasting flight. Paid on the day and cheap.

  5. Hot springs, optional

    On the lake shore, looking back up at the volcano. Entrance paid on the day.

  6. Back to your hotel

    Same car, same driver, usually back by mid-afternoon.

Anyone set on the summit

This is the rim, not the top. If you want to stand on the summit at sunrise, book the trek instead.

Anyone going after lunch

Cloud fills the caldera through the afternoon and the view disappears entirely.

Anyone who dislikes sales stops

The coffee plantation is a genuine one with free tastings, but it is still a place that sells coffee.

Come prepared

What To Bring

A light jacket

The ridge sits at about fifteen hundred metres and it is noticeably cooler than the coast, especially in the wind.

Sunglasses

The caldera is bright and open, and the glare off the lake is stronger than people expect at altitude.

Cash for the coffee stop

The plantations sell what you taste, and the warungs on the ridge road are cash only.

A camera or a charged phone

The whole point of the day is a view you will photograph more than you expect to.

How is this different from the sunrise trek?

No climb and no 2am alarm. You see the caldera from the rim rather than from the summit. Different day entirely, and it suits most people better than they expect.

Is the coffee stop a sales trap?

Tastings are free and there is no obligation to buy. We use plantations that behave; if anyone pressures you, tell your driver and we will stop using them.

Should we do the hot springs?

If you like sitting in warm water looking at a volcano, yes. It adds about ninety minutes and the entrance is paid on the day.

Can we add Tirta Empul?

Yes, it is on the same road and there is no extra charge for the car. The temple entrance is covered too.

When is the view clearest?

Before about eleven. Cloud fills the caldera through the afternoon, which is why we do not leave later.
