It is a long day with a lot of driving, because the three sit far apart on winding mountain roads. Going private means you pick the order and the pace.

  2. Pura Besakih, the Mother Temple

    The largest and most sacred temple complex in Bali, rising in terraces on the slopes of Mount Agung. Your guide walks it with you and handles the touts at the gate.

    The split gate that frames Mount Agung on a clear morning. The famous mirrored photo is a ticketed queue and entirely optional; the gate itself is free to walk up to.

    A royal water garden built around a spring, with koi ponds, stepping stones and tiered fountains. Bathing pools cost a little extra if you want them.

Anyone who cannot manage stairs

Lempuyang is a long climb of steps and Besakih rises in terraces. Neither has a step-free route to the parts worth seeing.

Anyone chasing the mirror photo specifically

It is a paid queue of up to two hours and the mountain may be in cloud when your number comes up. Book it knowing that, not hoping otherwise.

Anyone who dislikes long drives

Twelve hours, and the three temples are far apart on slow mountain roads. Roughly half the day is in the car.

Anyone unwilling to cover up

Shoulders and knees must be covered at all three. Sarongs are included, but sleeveless tops still need a layer.

Anyone flying out the same evening

You are back around 19:00 and the East Bali road is unpredictable in the wet season.

Knees and shoulders covered

A sarong is included at each temple, but many people prefer their own long trousers or a skirt for a full day of temple visits.

Shoes you can climb in

Lempuyang is a long flight of steps and Besakih rises in terraces. Flip-flops will get you there, but not comfortably.

A light rain layer

Agung makes its own weather. Clear at 08:00 and streaming with cloud by noon is completely normal up there.

Cash in small notes

For lunch, parking donations and the odd offering. Card is rarely an option once you leave the main road.

Patience at Lempuyang

The famous gate photo runs as a queue with a numbered ticket. Your guide will tell you the wait before you commit to it.

Sun protection

Besakih is open and largely unshaded, and you are at altitude, so it burns faster than the beach.

Is Besakih worth it, honestly?

It is the largest and most sacred temple complex in Bali, on the slopes of Agung, and on a clear morning it is genuinely impressive. It also has a reputation for pushy unofficial guides at the entrance. You go in with your own driver-guide, who deals with that, and you are never obliged to hire anyone else.

Do we have to queue for the Gates of Heaven photo?

No, and it is worth knowing what it is before you decide. The famous mirrored reflection is made with a piece of glass held under a phone, run as a ticketed queue that can be two hours in high season. The gate itself is free to walk up to and photograph without queueing. Your guide will tell you the current wait and you choose.

Will we see Mount Agung behind the gate?

Sometimes. Agung is over 3,000 metres and generates its own cloud, so it is often hidden by mid-morning. Going early gives you the best chance, which is why the pickup is at 07:00, but nobody can promise you a mountain.

Can we swim at Tirta Gangga?

There are bathing pools you can enter for a small extra fee, and stepping stones across the koi pond that everyone photographs. Bring swimwear if you want the pools; most people just walk the gardens.

Is there a dress code?

Yes, at all three. Shoulders and knees covered, and a sarong tied at the waist. Sarongs are included and your guide will show you how to wear one properly.

Can we swap one of the three?

Yes. Some guests drop Besakih for Tenganan, the old Bali Aga village, or add Taman Ujung water palace near Tirta Gangga. Tell us when you book and we will re-time the day.
